    Carlsbad Unified families and staff,

Thank you all for your patience and support as we officially rolled out Remote Online Learning this week. We crunched some numbers early in the week, and we had over 10,300 students access instruction through Google Classroom and Google Meet over the first few days; nearly 94% of our students were online and active this week. I’m very impressed with our students and teachers!

Please note that Spring Break is next week (April 6 through 10). Just like a traditional Spring Break, there will be no teacher-led instruction during this time. Remote Online Learning will begin again on Monday, April 13, and will continue for as long as our school facilities are closed.

Students are welcome to access our Extended Learning Activities website during Spring Break. Additionally, there are many great learning activities available at Common Sense Media’s Wide Open School website: You may choose to access these learning resources over Spring Break, or at any time.

Please note that meal service will be available at Carlsbad High School next week, Monday through Thursday, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. Friday, April 10 is a district holiday; families will be able to pick up two meals on Thursday, April 9.

We know this is a challenging time for many families. The County of San Diego has compiled a list of mental health resources which you may find useful. As we shared earlier this week, the San Diego County Office of Education also has some resources that may be helpful for you as you help your children deal with the numerous emotions they may be experiencing. Additionally, Live Well San Diego has curated a number of resources on their LiveWell@Home website.

We hope you and your loved ones and healthy and safe at home. Our teachers and staff look forward to reconnecting with students again on Monday, April 13, 2020.

    Carlsbad Unified families and staff,

Today, Governor Gavin Newsom commented in his daily press conference that all school facilities in the state of California should be closed for the rest of the school year, and all districts should fully commit to distance learning for the remainder of the school year.

He did not, however, issue an Executive Order closing all schools for the year.

As such, we are in the same situation as we were yesterday:

    1. Our school facilities are closed for the moment;
    2. Our teachers will continue to engage students in Remote Online Learning for as long as we’re closed; and
    3. We are waiting to hear from the San Diego County public health officer about when we can safely reopen.

If there is a possibility to safely reopen, even just for a week, we will do so. If there is a possibility to safely hold promotion and graduation ceremonies, we will do so. But it is too soon to tell.

A special word to the parents of high school seniors. We have immense sympathy for the unique position that your students are in—and understand that the uncertainty and disruption is especially difficult for them, as this is clearly not how they planned to spend their final months of high school.

We all have many questions about how things like grades, graduation, transcripts, scholarships, summer school, and continued distance learning instruction will be handled. We are waiting on additional guidance from the California Department of Education and the San Diego County Office of Education; please stay tuned for more specific information from us on these and many other issues.

In the meantime, here’s more information from the County Office of Education about the Governor’s press conference earlier today.

Many students of all ages may be struggling right now—as are many adults. The San Diego County Office of Education has shared some resources that may be helpful for you as you help your children deal with the numerous emotions they may be experiencing. Additionally, Live Well San Diego has curated a number of resources on their LiveWell@Home website.

I hope you and the members of your family are staying safe and healthy. We will provide additional information as soon as we are able.

Here are a few notes and links for you as we transition to our new format for teaching and learning during school closures in Carlsbad Unified.

    Remote Online Learning
Today was the first official day of Remote Online Learning. We hope your students were able to successfully connect with their teachers and access their assignments. This is a big transition, and we expect there to be bumps in the road along the way. Please encourage your students to check for assignments and activities daily, and to keep an open mind about this new experience.

Technology Needs for Remote Online Learning
As previously noted, students do not need a district-issued chromebook to receive lessons from their teacher. Any internet connected computer, tablet or cell phone will work. For those who need an internet-connected device, we’re currently distributing additional chromebooks and replacing damaged chromebooks. In order to request a device, or to request a replacement for a broken device, please fill out this form.

    Technology Support
We have assembled a team to provide our families with technical support. Many problems can be solved by reaching out to your teacher; however, advanced technical support and device issues can be addressed by submitting our Tech Help Form. By filling out the form, our Parent Support Team can assist you with district devices and district account issues.

Please contact your internet service provider for issues connecting to your home internet.

    Extended School Closures
A few takeaways from yesterday’s message about extended school closures:

    1. All schools in San Diego County are closed indefinitely.
    2. We hope to reopen our schools if we receive notification from public health officials that it is safe to do so. We’ll update families and staff just as soon as we have more information.
    3. Until we reopen, we’ll continue instruction through Remote Online Learning.

    2019-2020 SBAC Testing Schedule

Testing will be from 8:15am - 10:30am daily. Please avoid scheduling any doctors appointments or absences on these dates.  Students perform better on testing when they take it with the rest of their class.
